How to Appraise the Value of a Domain Name
Evaluating Digital Real Estate
Domain names are often compared to virtual real estate. While some domains cost under $10 to register, premium domains can sell for thousands or millions of dollars on aftermarket brokers. Appraising domain value requires analyzing several key indicators.
Factors Determining Domain Worth
- Extension (TLD): The `.com` extension remains the gold standard. A domain ending in `.com` is generally worth far more than the exact same name ending in newer gTLDs.
- Length and Readability: Short domains (especially 2, 3, or 4-letter words) are highly premium due to scarcity and brandability.
- Keywords and Search Volume: Domains containing high-value search terms (e.g. `loans.com` or `insurance.com`) attract organic traffic and have high advertiser value.
- Domain Age: Older domains registered in the 90s have established authority and historical value, which is highly appreciated by search engines.
